Comparison – LG Optimus 3D vs Apple iPhone 4

The LG Optimus 3D was announced during Mobile World Congress in February 2011 and the Apple iPhone 4 was announced in April 2010.

Both the Apple iPhone 4 and the LG Optimus 3D are quad-band devices. The Apple iPhone 4 weighs 137g and the LG Optimus 3D weighs 168g. The Apple iPhone 4 displays 640 x 960 pixels onto a 3.5-inch screen and the LG Optimus 3D displays 480 x 800 pixels onto a 4.3-inch screen. Both screens are rated at 16M colours.

The Apple iPhone 4 uses a single Apple A4 1 GHz processor to drive iOS 4.x. The LG Optimus 3D uses a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP4 processor to drive Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Both the LG Optimus 3D and the Apple iPhone 4 have a 5-megapixel main camera. The Apple iPhone 4 has a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera while the LG Optimus 3D has an unrated front-facing camera at the time of writing. The LG Optimus 3D is capable of recording video at 1920×1080 (1080p HD) whereas the Apple iPhone 4 is only capable of recording video at 1280×720 (720p HD). In addition, the LG Optimus 3D has a dual-lens camera that is capable of recording 3-megapixel 3D photos and 720p (30 fps) 3D videos.

The LG Optimus 3D has 8 GBs of storage and can accept microSD cards of up to 32 GBs. The Apple iPhone 4 comes in 16 or 32 GB variations but does not accept expansion cards of any kind for storage.

The LG Optimus 3D and the Apple iPhone 4 are fairly close in price at the time of writing. The Apple iPhone 4 has a display with better resolution and more onboard storage than the LG Optimus 3D. However, the LG Optimus 3D has a dual-core processor and accepts expansion cards for storage. The applications come from different stores as well.

Which of these two devices you select would likely come down to the operating system. Apple has its own set of fans and so does Google’s Android. However, the LG Optimus 3D has slight edge in hardware because of the newer and faster processor.

The new hardware includes, a front-facing video chat camera, a 5.0-megapixel camera with LED flash, Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad), and an improved display. The phone itself saw quite a few changes- a flat back, an aluminium border around the phone, it is also smaller than the 3GS, has a 16% larger battery and smaller components. The storage capacity of the iPhone 4 remains at 16 and 32GB.

The iPhone 4 has a 960 x 640 pixel display, a secondary microphone for noise cancellation, split buttons for volume, Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic. In addition to the accelerometer, there is a gyroscope for added positional accuracy.

The iPhone 4 connects with Bluetooth, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi.
